Nirvana

Nirvana means cessation which is the annulment of all conditioned thoughts. In other words it is a state in which one is free from pain, worry and the external world. Because nirvana is beyond all conditioning and all mental and linguistic constructs it is very difficult to articulate. Buddhists generally describe nirvana with metaphor or with silence. Because nirvana is an altered state of consciousness, it cannot accurately be compared to a normal state of mind.

It's interesting to learn about the technical definition of nirvana after reading about it in Siddhartha. I wonder if any of the other information that we learned from your Buddhism presentation will come up in the book!

Is their any Specific way practitionars of Buddhism to know if they have reached "Nirvana"?

To answer your question dean-Buddhists say that the only way to know what it is really like is to experience it yourself, so I would assume that if you did indeed experience it you would definitely know.

After hearing your presentation it gave Siddhartha a new meaning to me. I was better able to understand a lot of what was going on in the novel!

i like your blog a lot...i feel like you guys did a great job covering the main ideas of buddhism such as nirvana. I also agree with juliet on the fact that it does somewhat help with understanding the book.

They describe it with silence? Interesting. It seems as though acheiving enlightenment results in an altered state similar to that which is induced by a painkiller. The difference here is that it is self induced and constant. Also, is not a better word to describe nirvana perhaps "peace" or "tranquility"? Specifically, why silence?

Nirvana is interesting concept although I find it hard to beliece that anyone has reached it

Buddha was an avatar of lord Vishnu. He often comes to earth when there is are destruction, crimes, and sins which cross their limit. Buddha has taught us many great lessons about life. Nirvana has answers to all our questions. In Bible also, Jesus Christ has mentioned about how one can get relief from sadness and all sorts of life troubles. One should read Catholic Family Bible everyday without fail.
